Brian May: "I Was Born To Love You was one of the songs I spent literally
months constructing down at my studio in Allerton during the long "Made in Heaven"
process. It was an obsession for me. I don't know if many people realize (it has
been good really that mostly they don't) but the whole track is a montage around
the pieces of Freddie's vocal and keys which we pulled off of the version on Freddie's
solo album. I had always believed that this song could be a huge hit. And I wanted
to create the illusion that we had all gone into the studio and re-recorded it
together as Queen. The vocal is massively re-arranged to make it fit an entirely
new arrangement - I have a diary of the manipulations I tried every day for weeks
to send the track in new directions. And Roger and John both eventually came in
and played on it, in the spirit we might have done in the old days. And there
are many little ad-libs - the devoted fans will have recognised that I pinched
them from other tracks!
The icing on the cake was Dave Richards doing his magic on the bass and drums
as an addition to the final mix. Listen again - there are little asides and laughs
rescued from trawling through the multitracks....and some actual retuning of some
lines ...some 'live' trademarks, etc, etc. ...Freddie's voice soaring above big
Guitars and Drums - the way I certainly always dreamed the song could be ... and
the overall effect is the sound of the four Queenies in the studio having fun.
Well, it COULD have happened!!! Postscript - Freddie did the original track almost
as an aside. He never thought the song was good enough even to finish off, until
the record company (in this case CBS who signed him for a solo deal) insisted
it was a possibility for a single. Now it is a massive hit, I'm sure he would
be delighted!!"
