Album Info

Following the success of their comeback album The Works, Queen planned to take more time off and continue with further solo projects. Inspired by their acclaimed performance at Live Aid and an offer to provide music for the action film Highlander, those plans changed. Queen's twelfth album, A Kind Of Magic, brought Queen back to the top of the UK album chart after a 5 year hiatus.

Produced by Queen, Mack, and David Richards, the album was recorded at Musicland, The Townhouse, and Mountain Studios from September 1985 to April 1986. Mack produced the first single, One Vision, and tracks by Mercury and Deacon while Richards produced tracks written by by Taylor and May.

A Kind Of Magic was released by EMI in the UK on June 2, 1986, reaching #1 and starting a run of consecutive Queen albums to chart at the top. Unfortunately, the band's downturn in the states continued as their new effort only each #46 on the Billboard chart. For the most part, the album served as a soundtrack for the Russell Mulcahy film Highlander. With the exception of One Vision and Friends WIll Be Friends, all songs on the album appeared in one form or another in the feature.

The first single, One Vision, was written and recorded as a result of Queen's rejuvenation following Live Aid. The band was filmed recording their latest effort in Musicland Studios, which would be used for the promotional video and later for The Magic Years documentary. One Vision charted at #7 in the UK and #61 in the US.

The title track, written by Roger Taylor, continued his recent chart success, reaching #3 in the UK. The remaining two UK singles were also hits, the Deacon/Mercury penned Friends Will Be Friends reached #14 in the UK while Brian May's Who Wants To Live Forever settled at #24, only to become more popular over the years.

To promote the album, Queen embarked on The Magic Tour, their biggest and most successful tour ever. The 26 date two-month tour saw the band mostly performing at huge outdoor venues. Queen sold out two nights at their now legendary Wembley Stadium shows with demand being so high that Knebworth Park was added as the final date of the tour. Little did the band and the audience know it would be their last show with Freddie Mercury.

The Magic Tour would be represented on various Queen products including Live Magic, Live At Wembley '86, Hungarian Rhapsody, and On Air.

After their successful set at Live Aid, Queen were inspired to regroup and start recording again. The result was One Vision, which was released in November 1985. The single came out a full seven months before the release of the "A Kind Of Magic" album. The single version of One Vision has a shorter intro compared to the later release album version. The outro that appears on the album version isn't on the single version, which makes it more radio friendly. The track was a hit in the UK, reaching number 7. The song was also featured in the movie Iron Eagle.

To coincide with the 7" Single Version of One Vision, a 12" Extended Version was released in most territories. The Extended Version is more similar to the album version than the Single Version. When compared to the album take, the Extended Version has a much longer solo in the middle with plenty of drums and various vocal bits from Freddie.

A Kind Of Vision (Demo, August 1985) 3:24
Appears on: UK 2011 A Kind Of Magic Deluxe CD

As Roger Taylor explained in numberous interviews, including the commentary on Absolute Greatest, One Vision and A Kind Of Magic actually started as the same song. Until the 2011 Deluxe CD release, we didn't know that there was actually a demo recorded of this unified idea. This demo features Freddie on lead vocals and is more similar to A Kind Of Magic than it is to One Vision. Regardless, this is a very entertaining and surprising inclusion to the 2011 remaster releases.

A Kind Of Magic (Highlander Version) 4:23
Appears on: UK 2011 A Kind Of Magic Deluxe CD

This is quite possibly the best version of A Kind Of Magic released. This is the original version that Roger had in mind before Freddie "locked hiimself away" with the track. The album version, with Freddie's influence, ended up being slightly poppy and dance oriented. This original version was much more somber and atmospheric.

One Year Of Love (Extended Version) 6:40
Appears on: Highlander - The Immortal Edition

An extended version of One Year Of Love was made in 1986 to coincide with a single release. The song only ended up being released in one major market, France. Even though a 12" vinyl single was released, the album version was used. This version was finally released on a bonus CD that was included in "The Immortal Edition" DVD release of Highlander. The track begins with an almost 2 minute long instrumental section that features parts of the regular mix. Basically it starts out sounding like a remix of an instrumental version. Most of Freddie's vocals appear close together now without much instrumentation in between. The long saxophone part still appears. If you take out the first 2 minutes, it would be a good single remix.

One Year Of Love (Promo Edit) 3:51
Appears on: Hollywood Records One Year Of Love promo CD

An instrumental section being cut out and a slight remix of the ending characterize this promo edit. Up until 3:39, this track is identical to the album version. After this point, the album version has an instrumental solo that is edited out of the Promo Edit version. The track ends by playing the last few seconds of the album version outro.

One Year Of Love (The Town House Studios Alternative Version) 4:51
Appears on: Peter Freestone tape

This unreleased version of One Year Of Love comes from an audio tape sourced from Freddie's personal assistant, Peter Freestone. As for the track itself, dated January 25, 1986 from The Town House studios, does differ from the final album version in a few ways. The saxophone solo seems to be a different take and there is some lead guitar replacing the saxophone at 1:43. Freddie's vocals sound like they are the same used on the final version (or they are very close to it). The backing track is similar to the album version.

An excellent remix of the album version featuring a different (and better) intro, a few more instrumental bursts in the middle, and a new fading outro. This single remix is generally considered better than the album version. This was only available on 7" and 12" vinyl until 2010's The Singles Collection Volume 3. It was remastered and re-released again a year later for Island Records' A Kind Of Magic Deluxe CD.

Pain Is So Close To Pleasure (Extended Remix) 6:01
Appears on: US Pain Is So Close To Pleasure 12" vinyl, 12" Collection CD

This extended version remixes the single version, not the album version. The intro is much longer (1 min. 20 sec.), featuring some added bass and percussion effects. The outro is longer and features some nice guitar from Brian. A very good extended mix.
