Album Info

Blue Rock, the final album by The Cross was released exclusively in Germany, Japan, France, and Italy. The album was largely overshadowed by recent Queen releases and the death of Freddie Mercury. Two singles were released, only in Germany.

New Dark Ages was released on 7", 12", and CD single formats. An edited version of the title track is on the 7" and CD single while Ain't Put Nothin' Down is presented as a longer version on all three releases. Man On Fire (Live) is included on the 12" and CD single.

Life Changes was released as a CD single only with single versions of both Life Changes and Put It All Down To Love along with the non-album track Heartland.

The Cross toured Germany and Switzerland with Magnum in support of the album and perform a few sporatic shows afterwards. The Cross would eventually disband with Roger Taylor continuing his solo career with the 1994 album Happiness.

The lead-off single of album is a track that is very much Roger, a well-crafted, socially-motivated song which is very powerful. The Single Version cuts some lyrics and instrumental-bits, but still works very well. The album version is still better, but this is a close runner-up, retaining all the strength of the original.

A B-side from the "New Dark Ages" single, this version is the same as the album version, except that fades out thirty seconds later, so you get to hear more of the song at the end. This version predated the album, making the album version, technically, an edit of this version.

Millionaire

Millionaire (Album Version) 3:43

Millionaire (The Lot Album Version) 3:43
Appears on: The Lot

A mastering difference here compared the original 1991 CD release. The break point between Millionaire and Put It All Down To Love occurs in a slightly different place on The Lot Edition of the album. The music remains all intact.

Put It All Down To Love

Put It All Down To Love (Single Version) 3:41

On the album, there's a bridge between the end of "Millionaire" and this song. As it appears on the album's CD, this guitar bridge ends "Millionaire," but here it kicks off "Put It All Down To Love." In short, there's nothing new here you won't find on the album, but for a stand-alone version, this is the way to go.

Life Changes (7" Version) 3:55

This single is one the hard to find items in Queen collecting, and if you do find it, expect to pay an arm and a leg for it. It had the misfortune of being issued just before Freddie's death, and because of the nature of the track, the record company withdrew it from the market a few days later. Add to that it has a non-album b-side track ("Heartland") and its value grows exponentially. As for this version, it is a decent edit of the album version, cropping two minutes throughout, while still holding together nicely.

Life Changes (The Lot 1st Pressing Error) 5:54
Appears on: The Lot 1st Pressing

An extremely noticeable mistake appears at the end of the track (about 5:30). The track abruptly cuts out, followed by a few seconds of silence before the song starts again, then fades out. Of all the mistakes on the 1st Pressing of The Lot boxed set, this is easily the most glaring. This error was fixed for the Second Pressing of the box set.

Heartland

Heartland 4:47
Appears on: Germany Life Changes CD single, The Lot

In a radio interview before Blue Rock was released, the band said they'd recorded twenty-five songs. This was one of them, and whether it's worth paying upwards of $300 (US) to get the single to find it is up to you. The song itself is excellent, with the lead vocals by writter Peter Noone, and easily could have made the album. The CD single that this track appears on has become very collectible; it was withdrawn shortly after release due to Freddie's health.

Man On Fire (Live)

Man On Fire (Live) 4:52
Appears on: Germany New Dark Ages 12" vinyl, Germany New Dark Ages CD single

This is the same track issued earlier on the "Final Destination" single, except Roger's introduction is edited off, which is why it's a little shorter here.
