Album Info

Roger Taylor's debut solo album came four years after his debut single I Wanna Testify and shortly after Queen's most successful year worldwide to date. All tracks were produced, written, and arraged by the Queen drummer. Taylor provided all instruments and vocals except for "approximately 50% of keyboards" by engineer David Richards. The album was recorded at Queen's own Mountain Studios in Montreux, Switzerland.

Fun In Space was released on April 6, 1981 in the UK, peaking at #18 in the album chart. The album was released three days later in the US from Elektra, reaching #121.

The first UK single, Future Management, was released a week prior to the album. No promo video was produced; Taylor did however mime the song on Top Of The Pops. Future Management reached #49 on the UK chart. The second single, My Country, is a single version of the almost seven minute album version. With little promotion, My Country failed to chart in the UK. Let's Get Crazy was the only single released stateside, which failed to chart.

Fun In Space remained unavailable on CD until 1996 when it was released on the format is the UK and Japan. It was released again in 2013, newly remastered on The Lot boxset.

Based on vinyl speed comparisons, findings seem to indicate that of the two existing remasters of Fun In Space, the 1996 CD is the more faithful reproduction of the original vinyl. The 2013 remaster varies in speed from track to track and overall does not stay true to the 1981 release. Both remasters experience minor fluctuations to varying degrees within each track, the cause of which may be damage/stretching to the master tape. The speed fluctuations/drift in and of themselves are not serious drawbacks to the listening experience and are so slight as to be unnoticeable outside direct comparison with the original 1981 vinyl, the exception being the 2013 remaster of "My Country I & II", whose fluctuations are very pronounced. In terms of overall speed, the 1996 remaster is virtually identical to the original vinyl and would be my suggestion as the choice for listeners.

A massive edit of My Country I & II. The single version actually gains from being condensed down to less than 4 minutes. This edit seems to capture all of the main parts to retain the feeling of the original track. Very nicely done.
