Album Info
Roger Taylor's third solo album, Happiness?,
was the Queen drummer's first solo effort after the death of frontman Freddie
Mercury. Recording of the album took place between 1993 and 1994 as Taylor
and producer/ex-Cross bandmate Joshua J. Macrae built his home studio, Cosford
Mill.
Happiness was released on September 5, 1994, on what would have been Mercury's
48th birthday. The album charted at #22 in the UK and was not released in
the US. The first single, Nazis 1994, preceded the album by four months.
The anti neo-Nazi track proved controversial for radio and record stores;
controversy helped the track reach #22 in the UK chart. Nazis 1994 was released
on 7" and 12" colored vinyl and on CD single with multiple remixes.
The second single, Foreign Sand, was a collaboration with popular Japanese
musician Yoshiki. The 12" and CD single include a new recording of
The Cross track Final Destination with Yoshiki. Foreign Sand reached #26
on the UK chart.
The title track, Happiness, was the final single from the album. Live solo
performances of Queen tracks Ride The Wild Wind and I Want To Break Free,
along with live versions Everybody Hurts Sometime and Old Friends were included
as bonus tracks. Happiness, the single, reached #32 on the UK chart.

The Single Version is practically identical to the later Album Version,
but if you listen closely to the album, the full ending of Nazis 1994 is
cut off abruptly by the next track, Happiness. On the single, you can hear
the entire train sound effects at the end lasting for a few extra seconds
before fading out.

Nazis 1994 CD single, The

A very good mix of the track, with lots of added background elements (synth
and guitar). This radio mix has a harder and harsher sound to it. An improvement
over the album version.

Nazis 1994 CD single, The

A dance mix, which seems completely inappropriate for the message of the
track. Extra vocals are the only highlight of the track. Avoid this mix.

Nazis 1994 CD single, The

A very industrial sounding mix with lots of loud guitar. Features some more

Nazis 1994 CD single, The

This track is controversial because it contains clips from a speech by Hitler.
The added marching sounds at the opening of the track adds quite a bit of
power to the track. There are extra drumming and guitar parts not featured
in the album version.

Nazis 1994 CD single, The
Lot
This is a hugely reworked, remixed version of the original track by Joshua
J. Macrae. Lots of extra synths, strings, and background samples give the
track a very thick and full sound. Recommended for its slower, deliberate
sound.
Nazis 1994 (Banned Version) 2:38
Appears on: UK Happiness promo cassette
Very similar to the final album release. However, this version features
different lyrics (e.g. "fucking Nazis"). This version was banned and not
released (except from promo copies of the album).

This version of the album cut retains a bit more of the train sound effects
at the end, making it longer than the original release, yet still a bit
shorter than the full single version.

Happiness CD single
A single version of the album track. The album version has a very slight
portion of the beginning of Revelations segued into the end of the track.
The single version is completely stand-alone with a definitive ending.
Happiness (The Lot Album Version) 3:26
Appears on: The
Lot
Unlike the original album version, this track doesn't segue into Revelation
the same way (or, really, at all). Just where you expect Revelation to come
in, the music keeps going with echoing guitars for an extended fade-out.
There's also a mastering error, so the end of the fade-out appears at the
start of the next track (Revelation). It's very cool to hear the extra music
and effects, though unfortunate for the mastering error, as it's not quite
a proper stand-alone version.

Revelations (The Lot Album Version) 3:52

Starting here with the last few seconds of Happiness (a mastering error
of the previous track), this version doesn't have the segue from that track
as it does on the original album, so here the song starts by itself, with
the helicopter, adding about 7 more seconds and creating a moody intro.

The Hungry Mix of Revelations (called "Revelation" on the sleeve)
appears exclusively on the 2017 Journey's End 10" vinyl EP. In terms of
its backing track, this remix is a big departure from the album version.
There is a sparseness to it in places while sounding a bit more electronic
overall.

Foreign Sand CD single, The

A heavily edited single version that still works very well. The single edit
is a little punchier and not as easy going as the album version. The reduced
running time and the shorter beginning makes it much more accessible.
Foreign Sand (Video Version) 5:04
Appears on: The
Lot
The audio for the video version of Foreign Sand is essentially the Single
Edit with an longer ending. The extended ending has a lyric structure that
is a hybrid of the album and single edits. The ending lyric structure is:
even though you stand
here you stand
on foreign sand
ain't it grand
here we stand
on foreign sand
together we stand
on foreign sand

On The Lot edition of the album, instead of fading out at the end of the

Recorded live at Sheppards's Bush to promote the album and the upcoming

Dear Mr. Murdoch iTunes Download, The
Lot
A very timely and interesting mix of Roger's 1994 track. This new version
is similar to some of the stripped back mixes on the Queen 2011 Bonus EP
versions, such as I'm In Love With My Car. The lead vocal now has no effects
layed onto it; acoustic guitar and piano round out the instrumentation.
The lyrics are based more off of the promo version, though some are omitted.
This is an enjoyable alternative to the album version. This version was
later renamed the Nude Mix and included on some editions of Roger's Fun
On Earth album.
Dear Mr. Murdoch (The Lot Album Version) 4:28

This track is given a slightly longer ending, with a bit more solo horn
playing. This additional bit can also be heard at the end of the Promo Version,
too. It is a small addition, but very nice.

Recorded live at Sheppards's Bush. Ride The Wild Wind is credited to Queen,
but the song was penned by Roger. Roger does a nice job on vocals and it
works well as a live version. The car sound effects remain and there are
some extra keyboard bits.
