Single Info
To celebrate the NASA New Horizons interplanetary space
probe, Brian May, who was also a consultant on the project, recorded his
first entirely solo work in 20 years. Sharing the name of the mission, New
Horizons was released on New Years Day 2019 at the NASA Applied Physics
Laboratory in Columbia, Maryland, marking mankind's encounter with Ultima
Thule, an object on the edge of the solar system.
New Horizons was co-written by Brian May and Don Black. May is on lead vocals
and all instrumentation, save for drums by John Miceli. Stephen Hawking
is also appropriately featured.
The track was released as a digital download on January 1, 2019 and as a
limited Record Store Day 12" vinyl with extended and instrumental mixes.

Horizons 12" Record Store Day vinyl
Available exclusively on the 2019 Record Store Day 12" vinyl release,
the Ultima Thule Extended Mix is basically a combination of the download
single and the video version. The countdown from the video version starts
this mix and the Stephen Hawking outro from the download single is retained
at the end. The 12" single was limited to 4,000 copies.

The Ultima Thule Instrumental is also available exclusively on the 2019
Record Store Day 12" vinyl. As the name suggests, there are no lead
vocals from Brian, rather the backing track is presented in full glory.
There is no countdown at the beginning, nor is the Stephen Hawking outro
used.

video
The audio mix from the video version of New Horizons differs from the standard
digital download single. The video adds the countdown of the probe launch
at the beginning and does not feature the outro speech by Stephen Hawking.
