Album Info

A unique compilation, Queen Rocks explores the heavier side of the band outside the confines of anything considered to be strictly Greatest Hits. Queen Rocks was released in both the UK and US on November 3, 1997, reaching #6 in the UK chart. The original UK LP and CD releases feature the complete exploding crest art while second printing artwork has just the phoenix.

The 18-track compilation features two unlisted unique mixes of I Want It All and I'm In Love With My Car that combine elements of the album and single versions. A new version of I Can't Live With You, called the 1997 'Rocks' Retake, is a new mix with real drums from Roger (as opposed to the programmed drums on the album version) and additional guitar parts from Brian.

Most notably Queen Rocks ends with a brand new song, a ballad, from the remaining three members of Queen. No-One But You (Only The Good Die Young) was written by Brian May shortly after the Freddie Mercury statue was unveiled in Montreux, Switzerland. Originally intended for his solo project, Brian sent a demo of the track to Roger Taylor, who suggested it could be turned into a Queen track. No-One But You was released as a single in January 1998 reaching #13 on the UK chart. An accompanying video was filmed featuring the trio. This would prove to be the last Queen song recorded with John Deacon.

The exact same as the album version, just without the album's instrumental intro.

Tie Your Mother Down (Rocks Live Video Version) 4:11
Appears on: Queen Rocks VHS

This live edit appears only on the Queen Rocks VHS tape. This version has some drum and guitar bursts edited in at the beginning as a mini-intro to the video. The track ends with a crowd fade-out.

I Want It All

I Want It All (Rocks Mix) 4:30
Appears on: Queen Rocks, Track 3, Stone Cold Classics

A great remix that basically combines the album and single versions. This mix starts out like the single mix with the chorus vocal and goes into the rest of the album version. Brian's guitar solo is unedited.

I Can't Live With You

I Can't Live With You (1997 'Rocks' Retake) 4:47
Appears on: Queen Rocks, Track 5, UK 2011 Innuendo Deluxe CD

If you like the original, you'll definitely love this heavier version of the song. This Rocks Retake begins with Freddie looped singing "I Can't Live Without You." It has much heavier guitars and real drums from Roger (as opposed to programmed) throughout the entire track. Brian was inspired to add some new guitar parts as well. If you thought the album version was too soft, this one is for you. It also has a big outro instead of a fadeout, similar to how a live version could have been.

Hammer To Fall

Hammer To Fall 4:25

Hammer To Fall (Rocks Video Version) 3:47

Now I'm Here (Rocks Video Version) 3:59
Appears on: Queen Rocks VHS

The 1998 Rocks VHS video compilation features an edit of Now I'm Here that ends about 14 seconds early than the album version. The lyric "go, go, go little queenie", along with a bit of the guitar are all the remains of the end.

Fat Bottomed Girls

Fat Bottomed Girls (1994 EMI Remaster Error) 4:16
Appears on: Queen Rocks, Track 9 , 1994 Jazz Album Remaster
All of the Queen albums were remastered under the banner of the "Digital Master Series" and released over 1993/1994. The album remaster of Jazz features an error on Fat Bottomed Girls. A very loud (and annoying) "pop" sound is heard a few seconds into the song. This appears on all releases that use the EMI 1994 remasters.

Fat Bottomed Girls (Rocks Video Version) 3:16
Appears on: Queen Rocks VHS

The audio to the Rocks Video Version is pretty much the same as the Single Edit of the track, but instead of fading out at the end, it retains the outro of the album version. The remastering error from the 1994 remasters is present in this version (the "pop").

Appears on: Queen Rocks, Track 18, Greatest Hits III, UK No-One But You 7" vinyl, UK No-One But You CD single, UK The Singles Collection Volume 4

Released in 1997 as a tribute to Freddie from the remaining members of Queen. Originally intended for Brian's solo project, but turned into the last time all three remaining members of Queen would record together in a studio. A nice ballad that puts the Queen catalogue to a nice end.

No-One But You (Only The Good Die Young) (Video Version) 4:28
Appears on: Queen Rocks VHS, Greatest Flix III

The same as the regular version, but with some added atmospheric sounds, a door slam, and studio banter at the end.
