Album Info

Queen continued to grow upon their success from 1980, which saw them reach the top of the charts in both the UK and US with their album The Game. Additionally, the band scored their only two Billboard #1 hits that year with Crazy Little Thing Called Love and Another One Bites The Dust. Queen toured the world extensively in support of The Game throughout all of 1980, moving on to Japan, South America, and Mexico throughout 1981. The band released Greatest Hits on November 2, 1981 in the UK, an album which would eventually become the biggest seller of all time in that country.

To capitalize on their success, Queen performed two concerts on November 24 and 25, 1981 at the Forum in Montreal especially for a planned theatrical run. MobileVision had planned to show the footage on traveling outdoor screens. The release was beset with problems and the film did not open theatrically until September 1984, touring at select cinemas in the UK. A home video release followed with several reissues to come.

Years later, Queen Productions purchased the rights to the film and audio to release officially under the Queen banner. Rock Montreal was released on October 29, 2007 on triple LP vinyl, CD, and DVD. A special deluxe DVD edition called Rock Montreal & Live Aid was also released, including footage of the band's now legendary Live Aid performance. HD-DVD and Blu-ray releases would follow in November. High definition video formats benefited greatly from the 35mm source material.

The Montreal shows were compiled together to represent the best of the two nights. The original 35mm tapes were lost, leaving only the final 35mm print, so video editing was not possible. Two tracks did not survive the final film cut, Flash and The Hero, which were included on audio formats. Also of note, Under Pressure was first performed at these two concerts. Rock Montreal charted at #20 on the UK Charts.
