Album Info

After the completion of the final Queen album, 1995's Made In Heaven, Brian May began work on his second full studio LP at his home studio, Allerton Hill. Originally titled Heroes, the album was conceptually a tribute to Brian's favorite recording artists. Concurrently May wrote a song titled Another World, intended for the Gwyneth Paltrow romantic comedy Sliding Doors. Due to contractual issues, the song was not able to be used. The rejection of the Another World track coupled with Brian writing his own material changed the path of the Heroes concept; instead the album became titled Another World. Three cover songs made their way to the final album, Larry Williams' Slow Down, Jimi Hendrix's One Rainy Wish, and Mott The Hoople's All The Way From Memphis.

Another World was released on June 1, 1998 in the UK on picture disc vinyl and CD. While not as successful as Back To The Light, Another World did chart in the UK at #23.

Shortly before the album was completed, drummer Cozy Powell who was a creative force on both of Brian's albums, was killed in a car accident. The first single, The Business, was released a month after the tragic loss, remixed in tribute to the great Rainbow and Whitesnake drummer. The Business (Rock On Cozy Mix) charted in the UK at #51.

The follow-up single, Why Don't We Try Again, faired better on the UK single chart at #44. Two further singles, On My Way Up and Another World, were released exclusively in Holland. Cover songs such as Maybe Baby, F.B.I., Only Make Believe, and Hot Patootie, all leftovers from the Heroes concept, made their way as B-sides on the various singles.

In addition to Brian's touring band consisting of Cozy Powell, Neil Murray, Jamie Moses, and Spike Edney, Another World featured an impressive collection of musicians on the album tracks and various B-sides. Taylor Hawkins from Foo Fighters, played drums on Cyborg. Jeff Beck guested on guitar and was the subject of The Guv'nor. Status Quo's Rick Parfitt and Francis Rossi guested on the B-side instrumental F.B.I. Ian Hunter of Mott The Hoople fame, appropriately was sampled on All The Way From Memphis. Brian's future wife Anita Dobson and his daughter Emily added backing vocals to Hot Patootie.

Another World was released on CD in the US, but did not chart. CD copies did come with a mail-in form to receive an exclusive CD E.P. collecting the four B-side cover songs from Europe. The 4-track Retro Rock Special has since become a collector's item. Japan received their own tour mini album, an 8-track CD titled Red Special.

After being out of print for over two decades, a remastered edition of Another World as part of May's "Gold Series" was released on vinyl, CD, cassette, box set, and digital formats in 2022. The deluxe 2 CD and box set editions featured a bonus disc (titled Another Disc) that included B-sides and outtakes. Some of the extra tracks featured new work by Brian to complete the songs. As of yet, Brian was not specific on which songs feature new material.

An interesting remix, released as a tribute to Cozy Powell shortly after his death. The track itself is a really nicely done edit of the album track with a new drumming intro and a very long outro mixed in from Live At The Brixton Academy. Note the song was retitled The Business for the Rock On Cozy single release.

Originally called "Hard Business," this wasn't quite one complete song as much as several short sections written for the British TV series Frank Stubbs Promotes. Eventually, all the pieces were mixed together to create the Album Version years later. This is why the final version has so many wildly opposing heavy and soft sections. You'll find these segments on the TV series' first season.

Back To The Light featured guitar versions of Just One Life, Nothin' But Blue, and Too Much Love Will Kill You as B-sides. At the time, that concept was not continued for Another World. However, for the Gold Series re-release of the album, a guitar version of On My Way Up was included on the bonus CD. During promotion interviews for the Another World re-release, Brian did mention recording new parts to flesh out some of the bonus tracks. I suspect at least part of this track, possibly the electric guitars, are newly recorded.

Frank Stubbs' second series used this more optimistic piece, the way series one used "Business." If you have the album, it is probably superfluous to hunt these sections down.

This is an excellent live version from the Japan only Red Special album. This live version has a lot of wonderful acoustic and electric guitar instrumental bits. Brian sounds really great on vocals too.

Cyborg (Rise II - Main Version) 3:50
Appears on: Rise of the Robots II videogame

Brian wrote this song for the video game Rise II: Resurrection, the game sequel to Rise Of The Robots. This is actually the original version of the song. Compared to the album version, this version sounds like it needs a good remastering. It's not bad and it does have some different mixing and overdubs in places.

Cyborg (Rise II - Solo Instrumental Version) 3:29
Appears on: Rise of the Robots II videogame

An instrumental compliment to the Main version, this is Brian and drummer Taylor Hawkins rocking out. This isn't a straight instrumental of the Main version, though; it is its own long guitar solo. It shifts gears enough that it doesn't get too repetitive.

Cyborg (Rise II - Main Version Remix) 3:50
Appears on: Rise of the Robots II videogame

It is hard to tell the differences between this and the Main version. It mostly sounds cleaner all around, but not as cleaned up as the Album Version would be years later.

Cyborg (Rise II - Main Version Instrumental Remix) 3:49
Appears on: Rise of the Robots II videogame

A straight instrumental of the Main Version Remix, there is an extra guitar wail near the last verse. This is worth playing loud.

Cyborg (Solo Instrumental Version) 3:29
Appears on: Another World 2CD Deluxe Edition (2022), Another World Box Set (2022)

An excellent instrumental version that highlights Brian's guitar playing and the excellent drums of Taylor Hawkins, who passed away shortly before this version was released.

Baladas 99 is a two disc compilation CD released in Europe on November 16, 1999. Brian May contributed a Spanish lyric version of Another World, which at the time was exclusive to this collection. The track was included on the 2022 deluxe Gold Series re-release of Another World and even received the video treatment.

Hot Patootie

On NSO The Rocky Horror Show cast recording, this is listed as "What Ever Happened To Saturday Night." To make it a little more confusing, there's also a shorter highlights CD of the same cast recording, which doesn't have this song, but mistakenly titles the song "Eddie" as "Hot Patootie." If you want this song, look for Brian's name on the sleeve, or try to find a copy of Brian's Retro Rock Special EP. The song itself is a great cover of Meat Loaf's signature piece from the play (and movie).

An excellent rough mix of Brian's cover of the Shadows song with Francis Rossi and Rick Parfitt. Instead of the programmed bass and drums on the original B-side version, this mix features Status Quo alumni Jeff Rich on drums and John "Rhino" Edwards on bass.

Conway Twitty's hit gets served up and Brian takes you right to your first slow dance at the high school gym, '50s style! Another winner. Brian's touring band backed him on the performance including Neil Murray on bass, Cozy Powell on drums, Spike Edney on keys, and Jamie Moses on additional guitar.

My Boy

My Boy 2:04
Appears on: Lullabies With A Difference CD, Another World 2CD Deluxe Edition (2022), Another World Box Set (2022)
My Boy is rumored to have been originally recorded in 1982, during Queen's Hot Space sessions. It is unknown if it was intended to be a Queen song or a Brian solo track at the time. A Brian May solo version was finallly released in 1999 on the Lullabies With A Difference compilation CD. It is a fantastic slow track, featuring just Brian on vocals, piano, and all other instrumentation. Although the recording date of the version that is featured on Lullabies With A Difference is ambiguous, it can be assumed it was recorded during the Another World sessions, due to its inclusion on the Another World Gold Series Deluxe Edition 2 CD set.

Hammer To Fall (Live)

Hammer To Fall (Live From Paris) 9:12

This slows the song right down to a ballad, similar in sound to the opening of the Queen + Paul Rodgers versions recorded years later (see Return Of The Champions). This version builds and doesn't rock out until the very end. This is, frankly, a complete re-imaging of the song and is absolutely stunning.
